Pairs is a great concentration game for memory improvement. Pairs consists of pairs of cards from a deck of playing cards which are placed face down on a table and two cards are turned face up during each turn. The object of the game is to turn over pairs of matching cards. If a pair is matched, that pair is removed from the table and the player making the match keeps the cards. If a match is not made, the cards are returned face down on the same spot on the table. This article will discuss the game of Pairs, the variations and strategies of this game, and how it is a great concentration game for memory improvement.

Pairs may be played solitaire or against an opponent. The object of the game if playing solitaire is to clear the table turning over as few cards as possible. The object of the game if playing against an opponent is to hold the most pairs when all the cards have been cleared from the table. If playing against an opponent, the rules of the game may specify that each player alternate after turning over a pair or that the same player continue playing after a matched pair. Beginners should use a few pairs of cards and progress toward an entire deck as memory skills and concentration improve.

The strategy when playing against an opponent is for the player to turn over an unknown card. If this card matches one of the known cards, the player would turn over its matching card. If the card does not match any known card, the player would still turn over one of the known cards.

The reason for this strategy is that if the player turns over one of the remaining unknown cards and fails to make a match, the player will have provided the opponent free information regarding the identity of that second card.

When playing solitaire, the player would still begin each round by turning over an unknown card. If this card matches one of the known cards, the player would turn over its matching card. If the card does not match any known card, the player should still turn over another unknown card since there is no opponent to tip off about the identity of that second card.

To conclude, Pairs is a great concentration game for memory improvement. In addition, it is an enjoyable game to play. Thus, not only is Pairs entertaining, but it is a complete game for all.
